"Photography had barely been announced in 1839 when it entered people's imaginations and intellect and began to make its way into every sphere of life. And despite today's profusion of modern media our appetite for photographs hasn't diminished. In fact it seems insatiable.
Photographs take hold of particulars and make us look at them - individual suffering and specific instances of violence, wildness, beauty, devastation, ordinariness, and the enormous diversity of humanity. Photographs contemplate civilization and record far-flung fragments of the physical universe. We treasure pictures of people we love and save them, with pictures of ourselves for posterity. We create photographs to record our innermost thoughts and to sell just about everything."
